1. Introduction
The mattress is an important product that occupies considerable space at home but is frequently neglected in purchase decisions. However, when mentioning relaxing, sleeping, and resting, the bed and its primary entity, the mattress, are the principal items that first come to mind. The mattress, amalgamated with the bed, assumes an important role since it prepares the body to rest. It is of vital importance to have a good mattress since people both live and rest with the bed and spend up to a third of their lives on it. Moreover, a good sleep is necessary for a productive day.
This report presents the results of a survey and a comparative analysis of emperor-size and Euro double mattresses in Singapore. This comparison is conducted with the aim of finding out the prevalent external and internal features in emperor-size and Euro double mattresses. An analysis of the survey results and the comparison of the findings will allow buyers to select the mattresses that will best meet their requirements with the criteria they establish based on their characteristics and demands, and will also be of interest to the Singaporean mattress sector.
1.1. Background and Significance
1.1 Background and Significance We constantly need 6-7 hours of good quality sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sleep disturbances, including difficulty in falling asleep, waking up frequently or too early, are especially concerning for Singaporeans, as the long hours of work cause built-up tension and anxiety. Many characteristics of Emperor size and Euro Double mattress differ, such as the thickness of the mattress and the mattress topper material. Singapore is a multiracial country that practices freedom of religion. Hence, we assume that the different cultures have unique sleep behaviors. Sleep comfort is highly affected when the mattress is shared. Sometimes, the motion of one person may disturb another person. Having adequate room size provides good comfort. Emperor size and Euro Double mattresses are the two most common bed sizes purchased and are usually picked for guest rooms or rooms that accommodate couples.
Introduction: In today’s fast-paced world, sleep has become a luxury, especially for Singaporeans who are known to work long hours. The size of mattresses is also directly related to the comfort one enjoys while sleeping. As such, it is important to understand the different sizes of mattresses and the degree of satisfaction they provide in order to achieve a good night’s sleep. This paper seeks to compare the satisfaction derived from sleeping on Emperor size and Euro Double mattresses.
1.2. Purpose and Scope
The purpose of this project is to therefore determine the relative popularity and availability of these two less common mattress/comforter sizes. With this information, it was hoped that the Singaporean bedding industry would, in the future, consider using these two additional mattress sizes in their production. The information would also serve as guidelines for potential customers looking for the king or the queen-size comforter sets, if the preferred custom-sized comforter/duvet of king or queen size mattress set was not available.
The various sizes of mattresses that exist include the crib size mattress (the size of a baby crib), the twin size, single size, double/full size, queen size, king size, and the emperor size mattress in Singapore. The emperor and Euro double-size mattresses are less common bed sizes. The existing bedding standards are also outdated. It was clear that the two above sizes of mattresses and comforters were not as applicable, nor as popular as the other standard mattress sizes. Despite this, certain individuals do intend to purchase these sizes. The reality is that mattresses exist and there are comforter sets of these two sizes available in the market.
2. Overview of Mattress Sizes
Mattresses come in a variety of types, including traditional innerspring and hybrid models with an innerspring core and often considerable foam on the surface of the mattress. There are also foam mattresses, which can be composed of memory foam and other foam types, and can be quite effective at contouring to your body to reduce pressure and provide good support. Moreover, air mattresses are designed for portability and are often used at home during sleepovers or camping trips. The mattress sizes are known by different names such as king-size mattress, queen-size mattress, extra-large mattress, single mattress, double mattress, etc. The focus of this study is concentrated on the two largest sizes of mattresses within the premises of Singapore, i.e. emperor size and Euro double, in order to provide the necessary background of the mattress.
In general, a mattress is a large pad for supporting the body. It is designed to be used as a bed or on a bed’s frame. It is an important component of a bed that directly influences the sleep quality of a person. A mattress can be large or small, thin or thick, and soft or hard, depending on the user’s preference and availability of the mattress in the market. Large mattresses can be double, full, queen or king-sized ones, while small mattresses can be twin, single, small-double, and three-quarter ones. Other than beds and sleeping pads, mattresses have other applications such as cushions and toppers.
2.1. Standard Mattress Sizes
The preferred sizes purchased by consumers depend largely on needs and country traditions as well as the size of the bedroom. In Singapore, consumers are able to find a variety of bed sizes, such as queen, king, super king, California king (no preview in stores), emperor, and customized sizes at retail shops. Over the years, hotel industries have worked with hotels and retail companies to create an unforgettable hotel-like experience before, during, and after purchasing the bedding. As a result, bigger beds are found in our hotel rooms compared to the past. In this study, we will compare the emperor-size and euro double-size mattresses. Configured in different ways, the operational matrix design was conducted to obtain the necessary preference insights for mattress configurations of concern. Subsequently, the judgments from experts and the threshold values of physical shapes for mattress comfort will be collected, and within an aggregation of four sustainable and different MCDM methods for analyzing mattresses in configuration designs, these are valueless in comparison, realizing desirable mattresses of equal preference performances that are associated with different brand preferences.
Obtaining a good quality bed or mattress does not come cheap. As a good night’s sleep is essential, one cannot run away from the steeper prices for good mattresses. The price of a mattress and such large, attractive bedding in Singapore can easily cost thousands of dollars and at the upper brackets, hitting tens of thousands. The popular saying, “you get what you pay for” is truly reflected in the costs of bedding. That being said, it is widely accepted that the bigger a bed is, the more spacious and comfortable it gets. Although affordability is an important factor to some consumers, studies have shown that people are quite willing to dig deep into their pockets for a good quality bed or a roomy bed for a restful sleep, making the bed and mattress industry one that is capable of raking in billions of dollars every year.
2.2. Emperor Size Mattress
According to our survey in the Singaporean market of just over 30 retailers, we found that there are more “Emperor” sized mattresses as compared to the Euro Double sized mattresses in spite of the name “Emperor”. These mattresses are much closer in size when compared to the Super King and Eastern King respectively; both sizes are much larger compared to the Emperor and Euro Double. The price range of these mattresses is also pretty close to one another. The Euro Double mattress costs less than the Emperor mattress. However, the Euro Double mattress does cost more in terms of the price/action ratio.
The Emperor size mattress is the largest available mattress. The size of the “Emperor” mattress is not as standardized as compared to the Queen, King, and Super Single mattresses. In Singapore, we have measured these products in various stores to find a consensus size. Most of the “Emperor” sized mattresses out there are larger than the King size product which is 1830mm x 1905mm. The standard size of Emperor size mattresses is about 2130mm x 2135 mm. This ultra-sized bed could comfortably host 2 persons with a tad more space than the King size mattress. However, do take note that Super King mattresses do exist and their dimensions are larger than the Emperor sized mattresses. They could measure 2440mm x 2135mm depending on the brand of the mattress.
2.3. Euro Double Mattress
Buying a Euro double mattress means making a nice long-term investment. The items available in the market are also hypoallergenic, which reduces the possibility of allergic reactions. Mattress size is another important criterion that buyers consider. Double-size mattresses have additional sizes that are (on average) longer and wider compared to the standard ones. The additional 5% allows the person to have a good sleep, reduce the chances of backache, and accommodate various sleeping positions without any problems. Users who have budget limitations often select two standard-sized mattresses instead of one double model. This solution is cheaper, but it is worth noting that it also has some disadvantages. The double mattress offers a comfort that cannot be reached when sleeping on the border between the two mattresses.
Properties: Quality models that are available in the market boast of following properties. They provide firm support for the body. The firmer the mattress, the better it supports the spine alignment and relieves the stress on neck and upper back. It maximizes the entire sleeping surface by providing uniform comfort level. Many models are often quilted with cushioning foam and flannel padding. This ensures cozy sleep and additional protection against allergens and dust.
Euro double size mattresses (140 cm x 190 cm) are gaining popularity in Singapore. They were initially intended for standard use in European countries. The mattresses of this size are slightly smaller than the emperor size ones, but this makes them even more versatile in terms of use in small rooms or a limited bed space. Euro double mattresses can be purchased in one of the furniture stores or online. The prices charged by different retailers are fairly attractive. Size specifications of some Euro double size mattresses are given in Table 3.

3. Key Features and Specifications
Mattresses are designed for different consumers’ needs and orientations, such as people with different sleep positions and those with special requirements, such as the need for king-sized or emperor-sized mattresses. Singapore has a diverse market in specialty mattresses of all shapes and sizes, catering to specific consumer needs. Currently, among all the different sizes of mattresses, only 3 mattresses exhibit the 38-inch width size: the US Twin Size, the US Single size, and the Euro Single size. Among the three sizes, the US Single is the least common and popular in the market, with 98 rows. This may be partially due to Singaporeans being unfamiliar with the use of the military concept of the twin XL size mattresses. As for the single size mattresses, euro double mattress in singapore, certain manufacturers like King Koil only offer mattresses in the single and super single sizes, with no personal single options. To fill in this gap, we investigate the emperor size mattresses in this study.
One remarkable characteristic used to describe a mattress is its emperor size, which presents spaciousness and a comfortable slumber. The trending emperor size and Euro-size mattresses are the ultimate choices. A comparative study of 11 emperor size mattresses of 100×100 inches and 12 Euro Double size mattresses of 48×72 inches was conducted. The comparison showed the specification details, key differences, branding, and the design features directed by the majority of consumer reviews. It also revealed that various features provided the touchstones for evaluating the mattresses, such as the materials and ventilation levels of the products, which were different. After due consideration, the 2.5-inch Euro Double-sized EVOK by King Koil Powerpac mattresses were revealed as the most popular compared to a variety of brands and designs during our research and implementation. Besides being the most preferred, they are also at an appreciably lower price, which can save consumers a significant amount of money.
3.1. Materials and Construction
Pocket Sprung technology uses individually hand-inserted pocket springs. Each spring responds separately to the pressure and to the body of the sleeper, enabling the mattress to offer descent edge-to-edge support. Mattresses with pocket sprung technology will eliminate the transfer of movement. It is highly recommended for a couple. Each square meter of the spring contains about 3,000 springs. The top layer of Mattress 1 is made from cashmere and quilted with wool deodorant. Mattress 2 is made from cashmere material, but the top layer is quilted with wool deodorant. The top layer of Mattress 3 is also made from cashmere but quilted with wool deodorant and has a Jumper design. The top layer of all other mattresses is made from bamboo fabric. Only Mattress 4 has the bamboo fabric topside quilted with wool deodorant and with a Jumper design. From this analysis, it was found that the Emperor size mattress has a greater thickness and a warmer top layer material.
The Emperor size mattress has a dimension of 7 feet × 7 feet, while the Euro Double mattress has a dimension of 79 inches x 79 inches. These mattresses were further compared based on their properties: the spring type, the top layer material, the width, and thickness of the mattress. Six mattresses were compared. The Emperor size mattress is of type tight top with box top 700 springs. These springs are made of individual barrel-shaped springs. These are pocketed, also known as encased, ensuring that the mattress gives orthopedic support. All mattresses have 4 pillars of corner flank for added protection against wear and tear.
3.2. Comfort and Support Features
Pressure relief is an important mattress feature. If a mattress is too firm or puts too much pressure on the muscles and joints, it can cause discomfort and pressure sores. This explains why an egg crate foam mattress topper aids in reducing bed sores. In general, an adequately supportive firm mattress is the best for an aching back. Over the years, it has been recommended that an aching-back patient uses a board akin to plywood held on the bottom of the bed to firm up a mattress that sagged. On a Chinese account, a hay mattress is recommended instead. However, should the mattress be too firm or should the patient need to sleep on his/her side, some softness in the top layer needs to be supplemented by a cushion or comfort layer. Such a mattress topper helps relieve pressure and provide comfort. Examples of such materials are foam of different densities, natural fiber filling from silk to cotton, memory foam, and latex. Different levels of thickness and syntactic matters can adjust comfort level. For this research, the various relaxation levels provided by the different mattress toppers found in the Singapore market were classified according to four groups.

4. Price and Value Comparison
Arguably, Euro double mattresses, which are smaller in size, may offer better value considering the less cost to purchase this relatively cheaper mattress, which in turn may offer further cost savings by taking up less area in the home and being simpler to fit sheets. Furthermore, when analyzing the choices of an emperor size to a Euro double size mattress, the long-term orientation can never be made perfect. It is not possible to be absolutely sure which product is more suitable. Generally, the Euro double mattress is more bang for the buck due to relative price difference, less costly to move, handle, and maintain. However, the dilemma of the consumer in the process of optimizing the purchase arises as they think about the usage and potential future selling and purchasing of the property. With this, the emperor’s more real estate incremental benefits are so attractive, but in absorbing the expense in addressing the complex costs, the potential benefits of setting up the smaller Euro double mattress in generating savings upfront is undeniable.
Obviously, emperor size mattresses, which are larger in size than Euro double mattresses, are generally more expensive. It is not easy to ascertain what goes into the cost of a mattress because there are several factors that go into the costing facet, namely raw materials, manufacturing of the inner and outer beds, and handling costs. However, as future researchers, the price competitiveness could be further evaluated by comparing against the manufacturers’ direct cost and even possibly the cost to the consumer based on country, types and market channels, cost competition, and replacement strategies over the life of the mattress, and mattress recycling cost. Indeed, new products may be introduced, some may be added with new features, others hived at a regular interval or during macroeconomic conditions, retail prices may go down.
5. Consumer Preferences and Trends
Today’s consumers are increasingly asking for bigger mattress sizes that are considered super mattresses, European or luxury-sized mattresses, purposely designed to bring hotel-sized mattresses into homes. Mostly, a full-size super mattress is 6 feet 6 inches x 6 feet; a queen-sized super mattress is 6 feet 6 inches x 6 feet and 11 inches. As Emperor Size mattresses increase in popularity, more people use Euro Double size mattresses in the guest room or as a children’s single bed. However, Euro Double mattress sales still hold appeal in Europe as most married couples still have sufficient space to spread out without rolling over in the bed. In contrast, many families buy Emperor Size mattresses to sleep on and fit within the same bed space, exhibiting desirability and luxury that takes on extra dimensions. After all, Emperor Size mattresses offer an extra 12 industry inches over King-size versions to comfortably accommodate more luxurious sleepers at an indulgent price.
